Periodontal or gum disease happens when bacteria gets below the gum line and the attachment between the gum and tooth is lost. Three out of four Americans have some form of periodontal disease and only 3 out of 100 will ever get treated before its too late.
Gum disease is a silent, chronic, painless and communicable bacterial infection that often goes undetected or ignored until severe gum and bone destruction is unbearable and no longer able to be ignored. Left untreated, gum disease can cause tooth loss and may cause serious medical problems, including heart disease.
Conservative gum therapy involves Deep Scaling and Root Planing. Typically, Deep Scaling and Root Planing is typically complete in 2-4 visits focusing on one area at a time (left or right, upper or lower). At each visit, the corresponding area is anesthetized and the teeth and gums are gently cleaned. Plaque, calculus and bacteria are thoroughly removed from pockets within the gums. In a short amount of time, gums will become healthier and the pockets will reattach to a normal or near-normal depth. This therapy is gentle has a quick recovery. While surgery may still be indicated for severely advanced periodontal cases, Deep Scaling and Root Planing is an effective and comfortable option for early to moderate periodontal cases.
